Nocturnal panic attacks are much more difficult to diagnose than regular panic attacks due to the fact that they often get confused with bad dreams. There are plenty of folks who are troubled with nocturnal panic attacks and are completely oblivious of it. Except of course for the symptoms that they fail to recognize.
Typically, nocturnal panic attacks do not occur any time after nightfall. People go to sleep feeling perfectly all right, they probably never have panic attacks during the day, and fully ready to face the next day.

Somewhere in their period of sleep, something is triggered in their minds and they wake up completely frightened, sweating, and breathing hard. That sitting bolt upright from a deep sleep is the prime evidence of nocturnal panic attacks. Notice that the symptoms are not that different from daytime panic attacks like shortness of breath, sweating, palpitation, and fear.
Nocturnal panic attacks are as random as their daytime counterparts are, they just seem to happen for no reason at all and there is precious little that can be done to avoid them because the victim is fast asleep when they happen. As mentioned earlier, you must not confuse nocturnal panic attacks with dreams, as the two are completely unrelated. It is practically impossible for people who suffer from nocturnal panic attacks to even remember what they were dreaming about. The condition of their terror wipes that information clean out of their minds.
One of the major reasons for nocturnal panic attacks is sleep apnea and it affects many people who suffer from that sleeping disorder. Sleep apnea causes the heart rate to increase and this in turn increases the blood flow. Such high blood activity during sleep leads to unconscious anxiety and finally the whole situation explodes into nocturnal panic attacks. You might even say that nocturnal panic attacks are relief mechanisms for people who suffer from sleep apnea.
It is common for people with nocturnal panic attacks to suffer some during the day but this is not necessary. Similarly, people who are prone to panic attacks in daytime are at a higher risk of experiencing nocturnal panic attacks. Whichever way you look at it, of all the panic attacks that do take place, only about 10% happen at night. People often wrongly mistake the condition of their heart during nocturnal panic attacks as a symptom of some heart trouble.
An easy way of avoiding nocturnal panic attacks is to thoroughly examine your diet, especially what is your last meal of the day. Your diet determines to quite an extent what kind of sleep you will enjoy. A deep sleep means low risk of nocturnal panic attacks. The biggest culprits in the form of diet are caffeine during waking hours and alcohol after noon. Lower the consumption of both these consumables if you are taking a high quantity of them. Sweets, including artificial sweeteners, are another factor to consider when planning your diet to cope with nocturnal panic attacks.

For all mothers-to-be, it is absolutely natural to worry what lies ahead of their pregnancy. Although being pregnant for new mothers is a time for great joy, anticipation and excitement, some new mothers-to-be may develop fear. Husbands should also be aware that no matter what happens during panic attacks, panics attack can and never be able to hurt the sufferer.
Breathing exercises, as mentioned, can help pregnant mothers-to-be to prevent panic attacks. The keyword here is practice.
1. First place your hand on your stomach.
2. Slowly, with each inhale through the nose, you should feel your hand pushing out.
3. Now, again slowly exhale, through your mouth, you should feel your hand pushing into your stomach. Think of it like your hand pushing the air out of your body.
Regular practice provides protection and also it makes the exercises easier when the symptoms of panic attacks arise. When you had develop the ability to slow down your breathing, you will be able to keep the symptoms at bay and the success rate of preventing a full blown panic attack is very high.
However, it is also important to continue the exercises after the baby is born. This way, you will be able to establish an effective and efficient breathing pattern that you can protect yourself from future panic attacks.

Interesting Facts About Panic Disorder
You’ll recognize the symptoms, but in all likelihood, you won’t know what caused them.
One day, you’re going about your daily activities like every other day. Suddenly, a phenomenal dread passes through your body. Along with the unexplained fear comes heart palpitations, sweating, and a sense that you’re losing control.
The first thing that comes to mind is that something terrible is about to happen to you. At this point, you only want to get back to the safety of your home. Nothing else matters but that.
My first panic attack was unexpected and unnerving. I was in my apartment alone at the time. All I could do was curl up in the corner of my sofa and fall asleep. When I awoke, I felt better, but still experienced some discomfort. The most prominent was a fear of being alone again.
Looking back, I can understand how stress in my life had triggered this panic event. My husband and I were preparing to separate. At 32, I’d never lived alone before and was worried whether I could survive. Eventually, panic took over my life, along with fears at every turn.
Today, for the most part I’m panic-free, although I do have mild attacks now and then when stress becomes overwhelming. So what exactly is panic and what causes it?
Researchers have discovered several probable causes: heredity, biological factors, stressful life events, and exaggerated thinking.
Studies have shown that there are specific areas of the brain involved in anxiety and fear. These are the underlying causes of anxiety and panic disorders. The emotion of fear that was supposed to help our ancestors survive threats in the wild have become ‘confused’ by modern society.
In the wilderness, man literally feared for his life because of the dangers around him. Today, man uses that same fear response in any situation that appears ‘threatening’. This might be loss of a job, loss of a companion, loss of loved ones and financial difficulties.
They all come down to the basics of life: heat, shelter and food. Remove any one of them and he could die. Today’s losses can translate into the basics of life: heat, food and shelter. Without a job and income, we cannot afford these three needs.
Early man needed purpose just as he does today. For this, companionship is the answer. The problem comes when we experience exaggerated thoughts about life events that threaten these needs.
Scientists have discovered that abnormal activity of a small structure, the amygdala, inside the brain might be behind anxiety disorders.
Treatment
Treatment for panic disorder generally includes medications and a type of psychotherapy that teaches people how to view panic attacks differently. Most patients show significant progress after a few weeks of therapy. While relapses might occur, they can often be effectively treated.
You can learn ways to reduce and even eliminate anxiety and live a healthy, happy life again, as I have done.
