What To Do If You’re Having A Panic Attack In Traffic

Posted on Sunday, February 15, 2009 in Panic Attack Triggers

Panic Attacks Self Help Whilst Driving

You’re merrily driving on the highway, having your window open, trying to listen to the radio, when suddenly: Boom, it is there! The dreaded panic attack! You are suddenly trapped in a flow of heavy traffic on both sides, feeling extremely high or intoxicated with everything being unreal or surreal. You’re dizzy, confused and just barely realizing what’s going on. But you do know this: you have a full blown panic attack.

I know, because I’ve been through it. Not everybody feels like you’re right or drunk, there are a variety of symptoms that you can experience. Other symptoms that you could experience are:

  • heart pounding
  • shaking
  • uncertainty
  • dizzy
  • sick to your stomach
  • feel like you’re dying or going crazy

thinking your way out of panic attacks

These are all very common symptoms. We don’t experience all of them at the same time. Some people only experience a couple of these, other different ones every time. I don’t think there is an answer as to why is that.

However, it’s good to know some of the triggers of anxiety panic attack while driving, so you can recognise them. They might help you, because once you recognise they are triggers, you are aware to what is happening to you. If you know what it is, you’re no longer afraid of it, you are AWARE.

  • driving an unknown car
  • driving on an unknown road
  • the pressure to overtake slow drivers
  • strong incoming traffic, particularly in a bad weather (rain, fog, etc)
  • signs reminding you of death on the roads (seeing flowers, crosses along the road, memorials)
  • crossing a narrow bridge

how to stop panic attacks

If, while driving, you feel the first signs of a panic attack approaching, don’t panic! (I know, easier said than done). Slow down, and pull over your car, if you can. If you can’t, due to the road circumstances, then make sure you drive slowly, don’t worry about the other drivers honking on you. It’s their problem, not yours. Open your window, take some fresh air, inhale deeply. If you have water with you, drink a bit. Make sure that you always have a nice, relaxing CD with you, that you already know and love. Familiarity is very important to fall back to.

Certain places can be a trigger for anxiety and panic attacks. It could be anywhere but usually it’s a place that makes you feel uncomfortable where you feel unable to escape the situation.

Pregnancy Panic Attack

Posted on Thursday, February 5, 2009 in Panic Attack Triggers

Unfortunately, pregnancy and panic attacks go hand in hand for many mothers-to-be. For some women, the panic attacks have been a part of their lives for many years, and the attacks simply continue throughout their pregnancies.

For other women, the panic attacks are a brand new experience for them, and seem to be linked to the pregnancy itself.

avoiding panic attacks

This is not a strange occurrence. Many women who have never had a panic attack in their lives suddenly find themselves having repeated episodes soon after they learn they’re pregnant.

Even doctors aren’t completely sure why this should be. But most agree that it’s the result of a couple of things. One, the unstable hormonal activity in a pregnant body. And two, the natural anxiety that all women experience throughout their pregnancies.

The good news is, pregnant women experiencing panic attacks can effectively manage the problem in the same way all people can manage panic and anxiety.

Mindfulness meditation, for example. This is a great way for all people to treat panic attacks, and that includes pregnant women. There are lots of free resources online, teaching wonderful, natural mindfulness techniques for overcoming panic and anxiety and learning to relax in any situation.

If mindfulness meditation seems to work for you, then you can take it a step further and get yourself some audio CDs. These are raved about by many anxiety sufferers, so it’s well worth a look.

When it comes to pregnancy and panic attacks, the important thing to remember is it’s a very manageable situation, and completely natural relaxation methods can work wonders and are completely safe for the baby.

Avoiding Panic Attacks

Posted on Monday, January 26, 2009 in Panic Attack Triggers

If you are a chronic worrier, you have come to the right place as this article will share with you some practical tips you can use to help yourself take any anxious situation or even panic attacks in your stride. Practice the tips regularly and they will prove to be useful in helping you to remain calm and in control of your anxiety.

Identify Your Symptoms

The self help techniques for panic attacks will be more effective if you could start by identifying the symptoms or triggers that cause your anxiety level to rise unexpectedly and lead to panic attacks. Try your best to record down the events and feelings that you were going through when panic attacks struk. The idea here is to identify the chain of events so that you could find ways to cope when they happen again.

how to prevent panic attacks

Self Talk to Curb Panic Attacks

Chronic worriers always have unnecessary negative thoughts or negative self talk that can trigger anxiety and panic attack. If you are the type of person who tends to put yourself down or never gives yourself the benefit of the doubt, you’ll tend to trigger an unnecessary anxiety. It would then lead to extensive worry or even depression. And the next thing you know you’re having a panic attack; can’t do anything right and feel hopeless.

Tell yourself that things are going to be fine. In fact, most of the things we worry about would never happen. Learn to look on the bright side of life; learn to focus on the solutions instead of problems.

Learn to Breathe Properly

Proper breathing can help calm your mind and body. And it’s very easy to do; just put your left hand on your stomach and start to breathe in slowly and deeply through your nose, then out through your mouth. You will feel that your hand moves in and out as your stomach expands and contracts slowly. As you let your body takes in the oxygen it needs slowly and steadily, your mind and body start to calm down.

When you become anxious, you’ll notice that your breathing rate increases and you start to take short breathes. This will make you feel panic and more anxious. By slowing your breathing and concentrating on it, you will be able to control your mind better and keep panic attack at bay.

Countdown from 100

Counting down from 100 is another useful self help tips for panic attacks. The idea is similar to the breathing technique. By counting down, you will be able to focus on something other than those that make you feel fearful and worry.

Learn to Relax

Closing your eyes and picturing yourself in a faraway place that is peaceful and relaxing can help calm your mind. Another relaxation technique is to focus on muscle relaxation; close your eyes and focus on your arms, repeatedly tell them to relax. Repeat the process by focusing on your legs and other parts of your body.

If you practice these relaxation techniques often enough; they will become your second nature and you will be able to use them more naturally to calm your mind, slow your heart rate and stabilize your blood pressure. These are just some of the self help tips you can practice and use to combat panic attacks.
